My name is Martin Romatowski. I’m a Swedish art historian with a great interest in the religious art and architecture of the Late Medieval Period and Early Renaissance, in particular on the Italian peninsula.

I graduated from Stockholm University in June – my MA thesis was on the visual culture of the early-sixteenth-century pilgrimage site of San Vivaldo in Tuscany, one of the first Sacri Monti, and its connections to Franciscan meditation texts.

Thanks to the generosity of the C.M. Lerici Foundation, I’m currently able to spend a part of this fall in Italy, studying the Italian language and developing ideas connected to a future PhD project. I’m doing my research at the Swedish Institute in Rome, a stimulating and vibrant hub for Swedish scholars in the Eternal City.

Hopefully, the outcome will allow me to return to this wonderful country soon!
