Hello from Uppsala! My name is Altea Bonello and I’m a Master student from Università degli Studi di Verona , in Italy. Thanks to the C.M. Lerici Foundation’s grant, I’m now in the Uppsala, enjoying the beautiful weather and landscape.
My project is related to my master thesis “the role of vasculature in regulating the immune response in breast cancer”. Tumor is one of the biggest causes of death worldwide and in these past few years it seems increasing the number of people affected by it. It becomes crucial to find the most efficient cure. Nowadays, there are different treatment options, and, in the last few years, the use of immunotherapy has become popular. This therapy focuses on the stimulation of the immune system to fight the cancer. Nevertheless, it has been shown that not always this treatment is efficient.
This fall, for 4 months, I will have the wonderful opportunity to study how the activity of the immune system is biased by the vasculature. I will try to have a better look in how the endothelial cells of the blood vessels regulate the infiltration of the antitumoral immunity in the tumor sites and, in particular, how the Shb gene is able to orchestrate this regulation.
Thanks to this amazing opportunity, I will be able to improve my knowledge on these fascinating topics and to experience the amazing university life here in Uppsala!
